his home, and has been trying lawsuits and arguing appeals for more than 45 years. I include his firm bio below for anyone who is interested.įollowing a stint in the Army, John Karr got his law degree at Georgetown. But we were so very lucky to have known him. After I became a lawyer myself, Karr became a great mentor – his patience was impressive. There are so many moments and so many memories. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad meal with Karr. Paris with John Karr was a real treat – he found the best restaurants you never heard of. Karr and my mother came over for a month to celebrate. My mother and son share the same birthday – and the next year we were in Paris for my summer job. And even more impressed with how he threw himself into celebrating a 2-year-old’s birthday. I remember being incredibly impressed with how much he still loved the practice of law as a 72-year old trial lawyer. I remember him coming down to Carrboro, NC for my son’s second birthday after I had been accepted into law school. I first got to know Karr as my mother’s significant other (they never married) in the summer of 2002. I am told that some of his last words were “I’m satisfied” (but that his actual last words were singing the words of some show tune). His condition deteriorated later that evening, and he died surrounded by his two children and an old friend, singing show tunes. Unfortunately, that assessment was too optimistic. I had seen him the afternoon before, and while he wasn’t feeling well, the doctors were optimistic that he would soon be better and going home. John Karr (I knew him simply as “Karr”) passed away in the early morning hours of Apin the hospital.
